Since Then

Since then I have been looking at
the faces that walk around me,
never with a wandering glance
nor ever for a brief romance
but with a patience, infinite,
doused into minute care, too much perhaps,
to find the sparkle and calm delight
that I used to see in her face,
every night and day for twelve years now.

Often the time seems ten times
longer than it has been but often too
everything seemed to be in a blur,
when a baffled soul would ask aloud,
‘No, has it really been that long!
Then why does it still feel like yesterday
and why can I still remember the pain
so vividly, when she had looked away
smiling, then never to look back again!’
