Twenty Years

The paralyzing cold has crippled us all
as we are living through the coldest week
in modern history of humankind.
The wind is frozen from a vicious chill
that belies the latitude of the land
and the summer last year was vicious too,
blistering hot and dry with too little rain.
Memories of a life being temperate
when the days were never too warm or cold
are tender still, a mere twenty years old!

For twenty years the water that has flown
through all the rivers here is growing stale!
For twenty years the forest too has shrunk and wonder how
what was then a paradise has become, a desert now!
