Dedicated to Evelyn Underhill

So I touched a telegraph wire,
amid the conversing silence
and darkness of the night,
wondering, ‘What is on the other side?’ –

Perhaps it was light, though none could be seen,
perhaps it was sound but none could be heard,
perhaps it was touch but none could be felt!
I grew restless like mercury
and the Pacific in a depression!
I had to know what lied
at the other end, on the other side!

So I spread my wings and left the silence
and darkness of the night, whispering and
soared into the eternal stream of consciousness…
