But am I then not the protagonist too of my life,
just like you are of your vivid and complex one
with worries that hardly converge in either space or time?
We have our own friends, routines and ambitions,
each with our own inherent craziness
and a power to answer to!
Duly so, each human life is an epic too,
mostly visible to the one living it
but to the rest of the world it goes on
like an anthill sprawling deep underground
with its myriad connections to countless others,
though never too apparent to those passing by!
Perhaps not, what if I have no life of my own!
What if I was to be an extra all along?
If I had wings,
I too would seek the refuge of
the woods in an island
far away from
all human treks and habitats,
like those vampire finches
in the Galapagos!
as it is said for them,
a hurricane might take me there!
I would have an island,
teeming with birds and beasts,
all to myself!
This someday, I wonder if that is not
another of my lame reasons to justify
the cruel slings and arrows of a calamitous time
and the making of a scepter from two pennies and a dime!
As the maddening voices fade away,
is it silence or insanity, I wonder,
creeping in, instead? If I had a lake
to look into its softly cascading water,
what would have greeted my weary human eyes?
A madman or a Narcissus, perhaps!
Was it because I kept on asking why,
over and over again? I confess,
nothing was ever granted for me in life,
except the urge to explore relentless
the borders and the continents of human souls –
their varied plains, meadows, hills and countless river streams!
But once I saw those contrasts were more feigned than natural,
life soon became a nightmare that started as a cozy dream!
Science is nothing but
human intelligence’s attempt
to make sense of God’s artwork
through empirical means!
I had a sister in the Amazon,
a solitary Onça-pintada,
this is the tale of how humans violated
her habitat, killing her in the end!
They chopped and burned down the trees to construct
a mighty wonder of human progress
amid the grandest one of Nature’s own
and still my darling Nature sustains them!
She had battled on for many centuries,
while the Dodo and the giant Mammoth failed
but she could only fight so many wars
before yielding to human avarice!
Earlier she had been jailed too, so I heard
for protesting against humankind’s poisoned darts!
